Piano soloist Christopher O’Riley joins the SOST for the season finale concert on Saturday\, April 1 at 7:30 p.m. at the Julie Rogers Theatre featuring Rachmaninoff’s “Variations on a theme by Paganini” and Berlioz’s “Symphonie Fantastique.” \n“This season has been an amazing adventure in many ways\,” said SOST Executive Director Doug Fair. “We’ve presented outstanding artists\, featured new dimensions of musical performances\, and by including some locally treasured music\, welcomed new faces to our audiences. We hope that many of our ‘first time’ concert-goers will be back again and again. Our season finale includes beloved classics like the Rachmaninoff variations\, and the exciting epic symphonic story of a crazed artist. Pianist Christopher O’Riley’s wonderful talents will make the variations sparkle in his unique way!” \nWit\, charm\, romance\, rhythmic verve\, and masterly orchestration combine in what many consider to be one of Rachmaninoff’s greatest compositions – his “Paganini Variations.” The orchestra performs this masterwork with the amazing O’Riley as the piano soloist. Acclaimed for his engaging and deeply committed performances\, O’Riley is known to millions as the host of NPR’s “From the Top.” As a classical pianist\, he performs around the world and has garnered widespread praise for his untiring efforts to reach new audiences by performing piano arrangements of popular alternative music from Radiohead\, Pink Floyd\, Nirvana and more. His playing has been described as being “laced with an otherworldly elegance that can’t be duplicated.” \nOn the second half of the program is one of the greatest orchestral masterpieces\, “Symphonie Fantastique” by Hector Berlioz. DESCRIPTION:Following a sold-out concert with Tracy Byrd\, the Symphony of Southeast Texas (SOST) continues its “Symphony Fantastique” season by going back to the classics and performing great works from Johann Strauss\, Johannes Brahms and Robert Schumann. The SOST Chorus also joins in for the traditional choral concert on Saturday\, March 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Julie Rogers Theatre. \nThis season\, we are showcasing the many talents of our musicians as they perform a wide range of music from symphonic to popular to country-western. Going back to our roots\, this choral concert is one that features a choral style that interweaves many voices to produce harmony and lyrical style that goes beyond straight symphonic style. The orchestra is enhanced by the chorus of the SOST to add to the sonic beauty. \nThe traditional SOST choral concert is always a grand event. This season\, it begins with Johann Strauss’s classic waltz “On the Beautiful Blue Danube.” Commonly known as “The Waltz King\,” Johann Strauss captures the rhythmic style of riding on a boat that gently travels down a river. Most known for its soothing sounds played on New Year’s Day from Vienna\, his homeland. \nThe well-known Johannes Brahms’ “Variations on a theme by Haydn\, op. 56a” was a tribute to the earlier symphonic master he revered. Haydn’s St. Anthony Chorale is used as the choral tune\, and then played in true orchestral style\, a hallmark of Brahms. The piece was originally written for piano\, thus\, the “a” indicator on his opus 56. In form as well as thematic material\, these variations make us hear Haydn’s chorale in entirely new ways. \nGuest Conductor Dr. James Han will lead the SOST Chorus in Robert Schumann’s Requiem\, opus 148. Schumann\, a German composer\, was an influential music critic widely regarded as one of the greatest composers of the Romantic era. DESCRIPTION:American country music artist and Vidor native Tracy Byrd\, along with his band\, will be joining the SOST on stage for our second pops concert this season\, “Best of Byrd.” This is an innovative and exciting endeavor for all involved as it is the first appearance for Byrd and his band with a symphony orchestra and a new musical journey for the SOST.\nByrd broke through on the country music scene with his 1993 single “Holdin’ Heaven\,” which reached number one on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles & Tracks. His career spans over two decades\, including 30 chart-reaching singles and nine albums\, four of which were certified gold and one double platinum. DESCRIPTION:Symphony of Southeast Texas – “Triumphant Tchaikovsky”\nSaturday\, November 19\nJulie Rogers Theatre\n7:30pm \nThe Symphony of Southeast Texas (SOST) continues its Classics Series at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday\, Nov. 19 with “Triumphant Tchaikovsky\,” featuring some wonderful triumphs of the greatest composers of all time. Beethoven’s “Egmont Overture\,” Bizet’s Symphony in C and Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto make for an international program of time-honored classics. \nSOST Concertmaster Matthew Detrick performs one of the greatest violin concertos of all time\, Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto. It is considered one of the most technically difficult works for the violin. Detrick is no stranger to a challenge\, having begun playing the violin at the ripe age of three and turning it into an active performing and teaching career. Detrick is co-founder and artistic director of the internationally acclaimed Apollo Chamber Players\, a chamber music organization that explores the cultural and folkloric influences in classical music. He also performs frequently with Houston Grand Opera and Ballet orchestras\, Mercury\, and other Houston-based ensembles. He has appeared as soloist with the York Symphony Orchestra (PA) and SOST. Beyond Houston\, Detrick has performed with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra\, Jacksonville Symphony\, and Sarasota Opera Orchestra. He has concertized around the world as member of the AIMS Festival Orchestra in Graz\, Austria\, and as artist with the Zephyr Ensemble during its tours of Japan and Panama. \nThe concert also includes Beethoven’s well-loved “Egmont Overture\,” a set of pieces which was written for a play of the same name. The overture begins with a powerful\, strikingly original theme that summarizes the course of the drama\, from its ominous slow introduction to the manic transformation of tragedy into triumph in a brilliant coda\, which he echoed at the end of the play as a Victory Symphony. \nBizet’s Symphony in C was an extraordinary accomplishment for the 17-year-old student of the Paris Conservatoire.
